How petsafe works

Identify the pet

If you ever lose your pet or if it strays or is stolen you will only get it back if it is identified. There are two forms of ID for pets.

1. Microchips

Because they cannot be removed or altered microchips are the best form of positive identification for pets. They are injected under the skin between the shoulder blades. A microchip is totally passive - they have no working parts and emit no radiation. If a scanner is passed over a microchip it uses the energy of the scanner to "fire up" the chip, check it circuits and fire back its unique number, all in 0.4 millisec. All strays are now routinely scanned for the presence of a microchip and the technology works.

2. Petsafe tags

The petsafe tag is a collar tag with two numbers on it. One is a unique tag number that identifies your pet and the other is the petsafe free call number 1800 989 989. The beauty of these tags is that you do not need a microchip reader to re-home the pet. All the finder does is ring 1800 989 989 and tell us the number on the tag. We found out where they are and their number and then ring the owner and put them in touch with the finder.

The two forms of ID complement each other and form the ideal pet identification system. 

Link the pet with the owner on petsafe

It's no use identifying pets and not knowing who the owners are and how to contact them. So, after a pet is identified by a microchip and/or a petsafe tag, owner details are recorded with petsafe. This can be done either by way of registration forms, our internet site www.petsafe.com.au

Every owner is issued with a unique Petsafe Member ID and password. This gives owners access to their data to keep it up to date (for free) and control over what data is held and how it is used - a requirement of our Privacy Act.

To view your data, print a certificate or update your contact details owners can go to www.petsafe.com.au, click on "Member Login" enter your member ID and your password. Your data will then be displayed so you can check and update details and print them.
